# Ads for an audience that delegates the shopping

_Ads still reach people, but when a customer hands the search to an assistant, the shortlist forms somewhere your ad may not be. Part 6 of The Personal Agent Shift: what is live for ads inside ChatGPT and Meta's AI as of October 2026, what is a test, and what paid media is for now._

Your customer still scrolls. She sees your ad on Instagram between a friend's dog and a recipe, and some part of her registers it. That has not changed, and it is not going to change this year.

What has changed is the moment she decides. More and more, she does not search, compare and click. She tells an assistant what she wants, "a facial next week near home, under $150, good reviews," and the assistant comes back with a short list. The ad she half-noticed on Tuesday only matters if it shaped what she asked for, or if it put you on the list the assistant was willing to build.

This part of the series covers paid media in that world: first what is actually live for ads inside the assistants, then what ads are for when an agent does the shortlisting.

## The shortlist is short

When BrightLocal ran about 200,000 local, non-branded searches through AI tools, in a study published in September, the answers named only a handful of businesses each time.

:::chart bar "Businesses named per local AI answer, on average"
ChatGPT | 4.1
Google AI Mode | 3.5
Google AI Overviews | 2.5
source: [BrightLocal, September 16, 2026](https://www.brightlocal.com/research/local-ai-visibility-study/), about 200,000 localized searches over 60 days
:::

Those were search answers, not personal agents carrying out a task, but the lesson carries over. A results page shows ten links and a map full of pins. An assistant shows three or four names, and an agent acting on a brief may act on just one. There is no page two to buy your way onto.

## What is live inside assistants, October 2026

Here is the state of ads inside the big assistants as of this week, using the companies' own statements where we could reach them and naming the outlet where we could not.

| Where | What | Status |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Labeled ads below answers | **Live** on the Free and Go plans. Started as a US pilot on February 9, 2026. Self-serve Ads Manager opened in beta for US businesses on May 5, as reported by PPC Land. On October 21 OpenAI expanded to 89 countries. |
| ChatGPT | Visual ads during image generation | **Test.** US only, an initial group of advertisers, starting later in October. |
| ChatGPT | Sponsored Agents: a labeled chat with an advertiser's agent after an ad click | **Limited test** with select US advertisers, announced September 16. |
| ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Enterprise | No ads | OpenAI says these plans "will remain ad-free." Dots, OpenAI's personal agents, launched on Pro and Business Premium. |
| Meta's apps | Ads personalized using people's chats with Meta AI | **Live** since December 16, 2025, by Meta's own notice. Meta says sensitive topics are not used for ads. |
| Meta AI conversations | Sponsored placements inside the chat | **Not confirmed.** We found no Meta announcement of ads inside Meta AI chats. Meta says it will begin testing direct checkout in Meta AI this fall. |
| Muse | No ads | Meta says Muse carries none, as reported by Digiday. Meta plans to earn from merchant fees instead. |
| Claude | No ads | Anthropic said in February that "Claude will remain ad-free." |

:::stats
100,000+ | advertisers that have run campaigns on ChatGPT since launch

:::

Read the 100,000 carefully. OpenAI's wording is advertisers that "have run campaigns," a running total since launch, not how many are active today. And OpenAI says "advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides." Ads sit beside the answer and do not buy a place in it.

We wrote about the image ad test in [ChatGPT is about to show picture ads](/blog/chatgpt-is-about-to-show-picture-ads), and about Google's plans in [Ads are coming inside Google's AI answers](/blog/ads-are-coming-inside-googles-ai-answers).

## The best-equipped shoppers see the fewest ads

Line up that table and a pattern shows. ChatGPT's ads appear on the free and low-cost plans. OpenAI's personal agents launched on Pro, which stays ad-free. Muse has no ads. Claude, and so Claude Duet, has no ads.

So the person most likely to hand a whole task to an agent is, for now, the person least likely to see an ad inside that agent. Meta's plan for Muse spells it out: the money comes from the transaction, not the auction.

:::pullquote
"...we get a percent of the value that we are helping to create for people."
-- Mark Zuckerberg, Meta's Q3 2026 earnings call, on Muse, via Fortune
:::

That is our forecast about business models, and it could change. OpenAI is testing ads that hand the shopper to an advertiser's own agent, and Meta uses AI chats to shape the ads people see in its feeds. For planning the next year, though, assume the agent's shortlist is mostly earned rather than bought.

## What paid media is for when agents shortlist

If ads do not buy a spot on the list, what do they do? We see three jobs, and one of them is new.

:::flow "Where ads still touch a delegated purchase"
Want | Ads make the person want something, and want you
Brief | The person names you in what they ask for
Shortlist | The agent checks facts, reviews and fit
Choice | The person approves one option
Return | Ads reach known members and past customers
:::

**Shape the brief.** A person who has seen your studio's ads for months may say "find me something like that place on Main Street" or simply "book me at" your name. An agent follows a named request. That is brand demand, and it is the oldest job ads have. It matters more when the request is typed into an assistant than when it is typed into a search box, because the assistant may not show anyone else.

**Make the proof.** An agent checks reviews, listings and your website before it recommends you, which is what [Part 7](/blog/what-an-agent-counts-as-proof) is about. Ads that fill intro classes and first visits create the customers who leave the reviews. Judge them on booked visits, not clicks.

**Talk to people you already know.** Members, lapsed members, past guests. Your ads still reach them in feeds, and they are the people whose agents will ask "renew or switch?" at renewal time. We covered that in [Part 5](/blog/agents-shop-before-your-customer-asks).

:::compare "What an ad did" "What an ad does now"
Caught a person mid-search and sent them to a page that persuaded them. Measured by the click.
---
Plants a name before the search, fills the first visits that become reviews, and keeps known customers close. Measured by bookings.

The billboards still shine. The errand runner is reading the list it was given.
:::

We have run over 18,920 Meta ads, and the lesson that holds up is the dull one: judge each ad by what it costs to get a real lead, not by how good it looks. [What 18,920 Meta ads say about cost per lead](/blog/what-18920-meta-ads-say-about-cost-per-lead) has the detail. That discipline is worth more when a new placement, like ChatGPT's, arrives with big reach numbers and no proof yet for a local business.

:::takeaways "For the next budget meeting"
- ChatGPT ads are live on free plans in 89 countries. Visual ads and Sponsored Agents are tests.
- We found no confirmed ads inside Meta AI chats. Muse and Claude say they carry none.
- Agent shortlists are short and mostly earned. Spend to create demand for your name and to fill first visits.
- Keep judging every channel on booked visits. Test a new AI placement only against that bar.
