# TikTok built a local guide you can't buy your way into

_TikTok's new Must Eat guide ranks restaurants in three cities from what customers post, and no restaurant can pay to be on it. It is restaurants only for now. The lesson reaches every local business._

For years, getting found nearby meant two places: Google and Yelp. You claimed the listing, asked for reviews, maybe bought an ad on top. This week TikTok opened a third door, and it comes with a rule the other two never had. You cannot pay to get in.

## What happened

On Wednesday, October 28, TikTok announced Must Eat, an in-app restaurant guide, as reported by Nation's Restaurant News. TikTok's own newsroom post is dated October 29.

According to NRN, the guide is "built from more than 40 million posts, reviews, and comments gathered on the social platform." It launches in three places: New York City, Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area. Each city's list has two sections, Everyday Eats for casual favorites and Elevated Dining for special occasions.

The part that matters most is one sentence in NRN's report: "Independent restaurants and local specialties take priority, and no restaurant can pay to be featured." NRN also reports that before a list goes live, restaurants are reviewed "to confirm that the business is open, operating, and in good standing."

Listings carry "helpful details like price range, location, recommendation reasons, and related TikTok content," per NRN. People reach the guide from the search bar, the Local feed, place pages and the location tags on videos. Adam Presser, CEO of TikTok's U.S. joint venture, told NRN: "we have an integration with OpenTable, which means you can directly book your experience in the app." That booking works only for restaurants already on OpenTable.

Must Eat builds on TikTok GO, the in-app booking hub for things like hotels, tours and attractions that TikTok introduced on May 13, 2026. The Local feed it lives in arrived on February 12, 2026.

The scope is narrow. This is live, but only for restaurants, and only in those three metro areas. NRN reports no date for other cities or other kinds of businesses.

## What it means for your business

If you run a restaurant in one of those three metros, this is a new front door, and you are either on the list or you are not. If you run a gym, a salon, a dental office or a plumbing company anywhere else, it still matters, because it shows where local discovery is heading.

In NRN's report, TikTok says 27 million Americans visited an independent restaurant, café or shop for the first time after finding it on TikTok, generating an estimated $4.7 billion in local spending. That is TikTok's own claim. The direction is still worth taking seriously.

On Google, your listing is a page you control, and an ad can put you above anyone. On Must Eat, the ranking is built from what other people post about you. NRN says the lists reflect what the community found and kept going back to. Your customers move it, and your budget does not.

Picture a neighborhood ramen shop and a chain two blocks away with a bigger ad budget. If people keep filming the ramen shop's broth pour and tagging it, the ramen shop has the better shot.

You cannot buy your way onto this list. Your customers have to film their way there for you.
:::

:::compare "How you get found on a classic map listing" "How you get found on Must Eat"
You claim the listing, fill in hours and photos, ask for reviews, and can buy an ad above everyone else.

Customers post about you, the guide is built from those posts, TikTok reviews that you are open and in good standing, and nobody can pay to be featured.

The path to your door is drawn by the people who already walked it.

## What to do this week

:::steps
1. Give people a moment worth filming
One thing per visit that looks good on camera: the plate that arrives on fire, the reveal after a blowout, the before and after on a driveway. Let staff give it a beat.
2. Make your location easy to tag
Put your exact business name and neighborhood on a small sign near the counter or the mirror where people take photos. If customers tag the wrong place or no place, their posts help nobody find you.
3. Check how you show up on TikTok
Search your business name on TikTok and open the place page. Make sure the name, address and category match your Google listing, and fix what is wrong.
4. Reply to and reshare what customers post
Comment, thank them by name and reshare it. It tells the next customer that posting about you gets noticed.
5. If you are a restaurant in New York, Los Angeles or the Bay Area
Search for Must Eat in the app and see if you are on it. If you take reservations on OpenTable, make sure that listing is current, since that is how Must Eat books a table.
:::

Running several locations? Do steps 2 and 3 for each one. A post tagged to the wrong branch helps the wrong branch.

Same rule as [TikTok's AI that collects leads for you](/blog/tiktoks-ai-collects-your-leads-who-answers): the platform brings the person, and what happens next is yours.
