# What Happens When Marketing and Sales Aren’t Aligned

_Most businesses don’t have a lead problem. They have a handoff problem. Marketing generates interest. Sales converts it. When those two functions aren’t aligned, revenue leaks everywhere—and no one takes responsibility._

Most businesses don’t have a lead problem.
They have a handoff problem.

Marketing generates interest. Sales converts it. When those two functions aren’t aligned, revenue leaks everywhere—and no one takes responsibility.

Here’s what misalignment actually looks like:

- Marketing celebrates CPL going down 📉
- Sales complains that the leads are garbage 😒
- Follow-up is inconsistent or delayed ⏱️
- No shared definition of a “qualified lead.” ❓
- No feedback loop between teams 🔁

So what happens?

You get volume without revenue.

Marketing optimizes for cheaper leads. Sales gets flooded with low-intent prospects. Conversion rates drop. Then leadership panics and says, “We need better leads.”

No, you need alignment.

### **The Fix 🧩⚙️**

1. **Define what a qualified lead actually is**Not in theory. In reality.
Who buys? What do they look like? What do they say on the phone?
2. **Using real data to close the loop can help your teams feel more assured and trust in their feedback and decisions.**Marketing shouldn’t optimize for CPL. They should optimize to:

    - Cost per appointment
    - Cost per sale
    - Revenue per lead
3. **Creating a structured feedback system can help your teams feel more supported and capable of meaningful collaboration.**Sales can’t just say, “These leads suck.”
    They need structured feedback:

    - Contact rate
    - Show rate
    - Close rate
4.   **Align incentives**

If marketing is rewarded for cheap leads and sales are judged on revenue, you’ve         already lost.

Alignment isn’t just a meeting; it’s a system that can be measured by metrics like conversion rates and revenue growth, helping you track progress effectively. 🧭📊📈
It’s a system. ⚙️
