Blog AI and Agents · The Personal Agent Shift · Part 6

Ads for an audience that delegates the shopping

Ads still reach people, but when a customer hands the search to an assistant, the shortlist forms somewhere your ad may not be. Part 6 of The Personal Agent Shift: what is live for ads inside ChatGPT and Meta's AI as of October 2026, what is a test, and what paid media is for now.

A busy street of storefronts with bright billboards overhead, while inside one cafe window a person hands a short paper list to a small glowing magenta helper figure that is already heading out the door

Your customer still scrolls. She sees your ad on Instagram between a friend's dog and a recipe, and some part of her registers it. That has not changed, and it is not going to change this year.

What has changed is the moment she decides. More and more, she does not search, compare and click. She tells an assistant what she wants, "a facial next week near home, under $150, good reviews," and the assistant comes back with a short list. The ad she half-noticed on Tuesday only matters if it shaped what she asked for, or if it put you on the list the assistant was willing to build.

This part of the series covers paid media in that world: first what is actually live for ads inside the assistants, then what ads are for when an agent does the shortlisting.

The shortlist is short

When BrightLocal ran about 200,000 local, non-branded searches through AI tools, in a study published in September, the answers named only a handful of businesses each time.

Those were search answers, not personal agents carrying out a task, but the lesson carries over. A results page shows ten links and a map full of pins. An assistant shows three or four names, and an agent acting on a brief may act on just one. There is no page two to buy your way onto.

What is live inside assistants, October 2026

Here is the state of ads inside the big assistants as of this week, using the companies' own statements where we could reach them and naming the outlet where we could not.

Read the 100,000 carefully. OpenAI's wording is advertisers that "have run campaigns," a running total since launch, not how many are active today. And OpenAI says "advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides." Ads sit beside the answer and do not buy a place in it.

We wrote about the image ad test in ChatGPT is about to show picture ads, and about Google's plans in Ads are coming inside Google's AI answers.

The best-equipped shoppers see the fewest ads

Line up that table and a pattern shows. ChatGPT's ads appear on the free and low-cost plans. OpenAI's personal agents launched on Pro, which stays ad-free. Muse has no ads. Claude, and so Claude Duet, has no ads.

So the person most likely to hand a whole task to an agent is, for now, the person least likely to see an ad inside that agent. Meta's plan for Muse spells it out: the money comes from the transaction, not the auction.

"...we get a percent of the value that we are helping to create for people."

That is our forecast about business models, and it could change. OpenAI is testing ads that hand the shopper to an advertiser's own agent, and Meta uses AI chats to shape the ads people see in its feeds. For planning the next year, though, assume the agent's shortlist is mostly earned rather than bought.

What paid media is for when agents shortlist

If ads do not buy a spot on the list, what do they do? We see three jobs, and one of them is new.

Where ads still touch a delegated purchase
  1. 1WantAds make the person want something, and want you
  2. 2BriefThe person names you in what they ask for
  3. 3ShortlistThe agent checks facts, reviews and fit
  4. 4ChoiceThe person approves one option
  5. 5ReturnAds reach known members and past customers

Shape the brief. A person who has seen your studio's ads for months may say "find me something like that place on Main Street" or simply "book me at" your name. An agent follows a named request. That is brand demand, and it is the oldest job ads have. It matters more when the request is typed into an assistant than when it is typed into a search box, because the assistant may not show anyone else.

Make the proof. An agent checks reviews, listings and your website before it recommends you, which is what Part 7 is about. Ads that fill intro classes and first visits create the customers who leave the reviews. Judge them on booked visits, not clicks.

Talk to people you already know. Members, lapsed members, past guests. Your ads still reach them in feeds, and they are the people whose agents will ask "renew or switch?" at renewal time. We covered that in Part 5.

What an ad did

Caught a person mid-search and sent them to a page that persuaded them. Measured by the click.

What an ad does now

Plants a name before the search, fills the first visits that become reviews, and keeps known customers close. Measured by bookings.

A small town street at dusk with glowing billboards above the storefronts, while below, a tiny glowing magenta helper figure walks past them all carrying a short paper list toward one lit spa doorway
The billboards still shine. The errand runner is reading the list it was given.

We have run over 18,920 Meta ads, and the lesson that holds up is the dull one: judge each ad by what it costs to get a real lead, not by how good it looks. What 18,920 Meta ads say about cost per lead has the detail. That discipline is worth more when a new placement, like ChatGPT's, arrives with big reach numbers and no proof yet for a local business.

Back in Part 4 we looked at what an agent reads on your website. Next, in Part 7, we look at what it checks everywhere else.
