What you missed in marketing: October 12 to 18, 2026
Meta changes where your ad clicks go on October 28, Google hands you a budget dial, and Google tests a spot for the official site in its AI answers. Seven stories, what they mean for your business, and what to do this week.

Last week, Meta told advertisers it will change a setting in their existing ads unless they say no. Google gave you a budget control owners have wanted for years. None of it is hard to handle once you know it happened.
Here is the week of October 12, 2026, in short. Each story links to a full post that explains it and says what to do.
The three that matter most this week
Meta will change where your ad clicks go on October 28 unless you say no. Meta told advertisers it will add "product browsing" to existing Facebook and Instagram ads from October 28. Someone who taps your ad may land on a page inside Meta's apps before they reach your website. You can opt out from the notice before the 28th, or per ad later. You can finally cap how much Google spends outside of Search. From October 15, Google Ads began rolling out a way to set Search, search partners and Display as High or Low priority, and cap the Low ones as a percent of your daily budget. Zero percent tells Google not to spend there. Everything starts at High, so nothing changes until someone changes it. Read: you can finally cap Google's Display spend
Google is testing a spot for the official site at the top of its AI answers. For some tasks, Google says there are only one or two official places on the web, and it is testing a section that shows them first. If Google cannot tell which site is yours, a directory gets the spot. Read: Google is testing a spot for the official site

Two more from Google
Tell Google what a good lead looks like. Google Ads lead forms now let you mark which answers to a question make someone a qualified lead. Google learns from what you mark. A qualified lead still needs a fast call back. Read: tell Google what a good lead looks like
Google built one cart for every store. Universal Cart went live in the US on October 15 in AI Mode and the Gemini app. Shoppers fill one cart from many stores, and Google watches prices and stock for them. If you sell products, your product data is what shoppers see in that cart. Read: Google built one cart for every store
Switched on for you
Product browsing in your existing Meta ads, from October 28. Google's Universal Cart, live in the US. Facebook's "Your algorithm", rolling out to users.
Yours to switch on
Caps on Google's Display and partner spend. Qualifying answers on Google lead forms. A site Google can recognize as the official one.
Most of last week's changes were made for you. The useful ones you have to switch on yourself.
Two for your organic reach
Facebook users can now type what they want to see. Meta announced "Your algorithm" on October 13. People type the topics they want more or less of in Feed and Reels. Posts that say plainly what they are about have a better shot at reaching the people who asked. Read: Facebook users can now type what they want to see
Your Google rankings jumped around. Don't fix anything yet. Rank trackers lit up around October 14 to 16, and Google has not confirmed an update. Check calls, bookings, direction requests and forms before you rewrite a page. Read: your Google rankings jumped, don't fix anything yet

What to do this week
- Decide on Meta product browsing before October 28
Opt out from the notice, or leave it on and check where your ads now send people.
- Look at where your Google budget goes
In each Search campaign, see how much ran on Display and partner sites, then set a cap.
- Mark your qualifying answers
On every Google lead form question, tick the answers that make someone worth a call.
- Make your official site easy to recognize
Same name, address, hours, services and booking link on your site and every listing.
- Leave your rankings alone for a week
Compare calls and bookings week over week before you change anything.
