What you missed in marketing: October 26 to November 1, 2026
Google starts selling ads in your customer's follow-up question, seven words become legal opt-outs in a text, and Meta pushes back its new ad terms. Five stories, what they mean for your business, and what to do this week.

This week the money in search moved into the conversation. Google said it earns less on its AI answers and, the same day, said it will put ads in the follow-up questions. A new federal rule on texting has a date on it. Meta pushed back the terms that put the risk of its AI on you. TikTok started ranking restaurants by what customers post. And one audit showed how easily the numbers you budget from can be wrong.
Here is the week of October 26, 2026, in short. Each story links to a full post that explains it and says what to do.
The two with a date on them
Quit is now a legal opt-out in a text, and so are six other words. The FCC's new rules on taking back consent to calls and texts were published on October 26 and take effect November 25, 2026. A reply of stop, quit, end, revoke, opt out, cancel or unsubscribe has to be honored, even if your text only mentions "stop," and you have at most ten business days to do it. This is not legal advice. Read: quit is now a legal opt-out in a text
Meta pushed back its new ad terms. The revised terms that make advertisers "solely responsible" for what Meta's AI features create or change, as reported by Beri.net, were due October 30. Meta moved them to November 20, then said on October 28 that its consultation "could extend beyond November 20," as reported by Reuters. The AI features in your ads are running either way. Two about where customers find you
Google will show your ad in the follow-up question. On October 28, Google said it is launching ads in follow-up questions inside AI Mode in the US. As reported by Search Engine Journal, existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns are eligible by default. The same day, Google said AI Mode ads earn less than regular search ads, and its search revenue grew 12%, down from 17% the quarter before. Separately, a screenshot showed an ad inside a Bing AI answer; Microsoft has not commented, so treat it as a test. Read: Google will show your ad in the follow-up question
TikTok built a local guide you can't buy your way into. TikTok's Must Eat guide ranks restaurants in New York City, Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area from more than 40 million posts, reviews and comments, and, as Nation's Restaurant News reports, no restaurant can pay to be featured. It is restaurants in three metros for now. Read: TikTok built a local guide you can't buy your way into
Decided for you, unless you act
Your Google campaigns may already show in AI Mode follow-ups. Meta's AI features keep running in your ads while the terms wait. Customers' posts decide who TikTok recommends.
Yours to do this week
Make your landing page answer the second question. Read what Meta's AI wrote in your ads. Test every opt-out word on your texting tool. Count your real sales against your analytics.
Most of this week's news moved a decision closer to you: a default, a deadline and a list you cannot buy onto. You can still act on each one.
One about the numbers you budget from
Your analytics may be missing your holiday sales. On October 28, Search Engine Journal published an audit comparing Google Analytics 4 with real store orders at eight U.K. online stores. At one store, GA4 recorded 81% of web orders in the 2024 holiday quarter and 41% in 2025. Another store logged 2,215 orders over five weeks while GA4 recorded none. The same check works for bookings, signups and leads. Read: your analytics may be missing your holiday sales

What to do this week
- Read your search terms report for long questions
Then make sure your landing page answers the follow-up: price, hours, how to start.
- Test every opt-out word on your texting tool
Send stop, quit, end, revoke, opt out, cancel and unsubscribe to your own number and check each one works, before November 25.
- Open your Meta ads and read what the AI changed
Turn off the Advantage+ features you would not sign your name to. The terms delay did not pause them.
- Give customers a reason to film and tag you
Even if TikTok does not rank your category yet, what people post is becoming how you get found.
- Put your real count next to your analytics
Four weeks of real orders, bookings or leads against what analytics says. Fix a big gap before you touch budgets.
